In Minecraft, you will need to have some torches to light up your houses, mines, and buildings at night.

A torch can be made by putting a stick below a piece of coal or charcoal.
Coal can be found underground, and charcoal can be made by placing a wood plank on the bottem of a furnace, and a log on the top. Sticks can be made by putting a wood plank above a wood plank in a crafting table.

Torches can be placed on walls and on floors by pressing the use item button on wall/floor. Torches will be washed away by water, and can be broken very quickly. You can stack torches in a 64 count. There is another type of torch, a redstone torch, which emits a dim red light. It is used for making redstone devices.
