Cocoa plants can only be grown on the sides of jungle tree wood.

To plant cocoa plants, just press the use item button on jungle wood while holding cocoa beans.

Cocoa plants have three stages of growth.

A small and medium sized cocoa plant will drop 1 cocoa bean. A full sized cocoa plant will drop 3 cocoa beans. 

Cocoa plants will create a very small amount of lumination.
Also, you can walk on top of a cocoa plant.
